Hannam-dong, Seen Twice: From Namsan to the River and Back

FIELD NOTES · NO. 01–02

Hannam-dong, seen twice — once from above, once from below.

The first view looks down from Namsan toward the Han River: rooftops layered against the hillside, the river a pale line in the distance. The second reverses the angle entirely — from the riverside, looking back up toward Namsan, the same neighborhood reads closer, denser, more human in scale.

Two directions, one place. Nothing is staged; the camera simply moves.

From the slope of Namsan, Hannam-dong unfolds in layers — rooftops, tree lines, the slow curve of the river beyond.

Part 2 — From the River, Toward Namsan

From the river, looking back toward Namsan, the neighborhood reveals itself differently — nearer, quieter, less abstract.

Comparing Numbeo's 2016 annual index with its 2026 mid-year edition, Seoul's price-to-income ratio (PIR) — the multiple of average household income required to purchase an apartment — moved from 16.6 to approximately 30.0.
